What Is A Balanced Meal?

A balanced meal is simply a meal that has a variety of different aspects to it. These different aspects are:
- Vegetables/fruits
- Carbohydrates
- Proteins

Why do we need vegetables/fruits?
Vegetables and fruits all provide vital minerals and vitamins that our bodies need to stay healthy and function properly. They can also help reduce the risk of heart disease or strokes. They come in a variety of different types, from, apples to potatoes. We should all aim to have our 5 a day to keep our bodies happy.

Why do we need carbohydrates?
Carbohydrates are foods which when we digest, turns into glucose, this glucose is what powers our bodies. We need carbohydrates to make sure we have the energy to do our day to day things. Carbohydrates are found in many things, such as rice, pasta, and bread.

Why do we need protein?
Every single cell in your body contains protein, which are chains of amino acids. We need to consume protein to help our bodies to fix and repair these cells. They are also vital in the growth and development of children and teens. Additionally, if you do exercise, protein assists you to repair torn muscles.

What does a balanced meal look like?
A balanced meal is one that contains all three of these items in different forms. We should be aiming to have 50% fruits and vegetables, 25% carbohydrates, and 25% proteins. Some examples of a balanced meal plate could be:
- Chicken, rice, and vegetables
- Pasta, Quorn, sweetcorn, and mushrooms
- Tortillas, pulled pork, peppers, and salad

Remember, a colourful meal is a healthy meal.
